JAYS TRILLED WITH CUP PROGRESS!
One of the New Milton Table Tennis Club’s teams has made it through to the semi-finals of the annual Times & Directory Handicap Cup competition but the two other teams crashed out of the Cup. There was more success in the “Plate” as the three Milton teams booked their places in the quarter-finals.
In the Cup, the J Team (Plamen Petrov, John Parkhouse & Mike Roberts) from Div 3 disposed of Premier outfit Merton B by 5-2 thanks to a really good team performance. Impressive new signing Petrov (pictured below) carried his league form into the cup by winning both of his matches, Parkhouse won two out of three and captain Roberts won one of out of two.
The D team (Frank Handy, Gerard Redman & Mike Roberts) from Div 1 found the handicaps really heavy going against Winton YMCA F (Div 4) and were soundly beaten 9-0 at Winton. Unfased by the heavy defeat, the Milton players sportingly played the remainder of the matches having already lost the match at 5-0.
Milton’s other Div 1 team (John Millward, Brian Bickell & Shaun Newcomb) had a closer match against Ringwood B (Div 2) but lost 6-3, replies coming from England veteran Bickell (2) and captain Millward (1).
The G team featuring Chris Pusey, Bob Fagan & Dave Cuddon are sitting pretty atop Div 3 in the league and are replicating this success in the Plate. In their 5-3 victory over Winton YMCA E from Div 4, Cuddon played out of his skin to pick up his hat-trick, and Pusey won two out of his three matches.
Milton’s most impressive win came as the H team starring Dave Sutton, Sylvia Smith & Les Smith (no relation) from Div 3 beat Div 5 high-flyers Merton J 8-1 in their own back yard. Sutton and Ms Smith were on top form to take their hat-tricks and captain Smith bagged a brace.
The M team had a much easier passage into the quarter-finals of the Plate as Bmth Sports H had to concede their match because they were unable to put out a side. The L team’s fate is unknown as their match against Merton C was postponed. Full results details are below:-

HONOURS EVEN IN NEW MILTON DERBY
The New Milton Table Club managed to win six out of their ten matches in the Bournemouth & District league last week, one of those wins coming at the expense of one of their own teams in a local derby.
The F team (Steve Cheesman, Plamen Petrov & Andrew Stainton) completely turned the tables on their E team (Andrew Daish, Simon Daish & Simon Golding) by beating them 6-4 in their Div 2 derby having lost 4-6 first time around. The E team looked like doing the double over their club mates as they went 3-0 up, Andrew Daish beating F team captain Cheesman, Simon Daish getting the better of Petrov, and Golding doing the same to Stainton. That proved a false dawn for the E’s, however, as they lost all of the remaining matches, apart from Simon Daish’s victory over Stainton. The F’s needed the doubles to seal their victory to make it honours even, and Cheesman (pictured below) and Petrov duly saw off the Simons in three straight sets.
Div 3 saw the table-topping G team (Dave Cuddon, Chris Pusey & Terry Jenvey) do the double over basement boys Ringwood C with a 10-0 drubbing at Mudeford Wood. They increased their lead to four points over second-placed Bmth Sports K who dropped a point against Winton YMCA C.
Both the Premier teams won their matches; the A team beating bottom-dwellers Ringwood A by 8-2 at Mudeford Wood, despite having to call two players up from Div 1. Gerard Redman scored his first ever Premier hat-trick and team-mate Paul Iliffe chipped in with the one win. Regular Umit Kaya came up with his second treble of the campaign, which left the A’s needing the doubles to secure maximum points. What an epic match that turned out to be as the Ringwood pairing just wouldn’t lay down. Milton narrowly lost the first set 11-13, then sneaked the second by 15-13 and took the third 11-9. Ringwood won the fourth very comfortably at 11-5, but Milton just edged the fifth and final set by 12-10 to pile more agony on the Brewers.
The B team (Jack Trafford, Andy Tipsana & John Hook) had a much easier victory over top flight strugglers Merton B, who didn’t help their cause by turning up a player short. In their 7-3 win, Hook beat both players in attendance, and Trafford celebrated his fifteenth birthday with a win over Merton’s very tricky Tom Stride and a doubles win with Hook. HAIL THE MIGHTY PLAMEN!
The Bournemouth & District Table Tennis league programme resumed after the Christmas break last week with the New Milton Club winning six out of their twelve matches. Player of the Week just has to be impressive new signing, Bulgarian Plamen Petrov who won two hat tricks; one for his own J team in Div 3 and one playing up a division for the F team.
Four of Milton’s wins were 8-2 maximum pointers and the other two by the lower 6-4 scoreline. Two of the six defeats were 10-0 whitewashes suffered by the A and B team in the Premier, but they were at the hands of second placed Bmth Sports B and leaders Bmth Sports A respectively.
Petrov (pictured below) got his week off to a good start by helping his J team beat Div 3 strugglers Merton F 6-4 having lost 3-7 first time around without him. Then he was called up to play for the F team in Div 2 and his second hat-trick of the week helped them beat strugglers Broadstone D by 8-2, an improvement on their first round 7-3 win.
The G team (Terry Jenvey, Chris Pusey & Dave Cuddon) were relegated from Div 2 last season, but they are currently on top of Div 3, hoping to bounce straight back. Their 8-2 victory over Winton YMCA C certainly did their cause no harm, but second placed Bmth Sports K are still only three points behind them having beaten their own J team 8-2. MIXED CUP RESULTS FOR NMTTC TEAMS
Five teams from the New Milton Table Tennis Club were involved in the Annual Times & Directory Handicap competition last week, with three of them going through to the next round. Four of the matches were in the Cup proper with three teams going through, whilst the “Plate” saw the F team deprived of further progress.
Both teams who normally ply their trade in the 1st Division booked their places in Round 3 of the Cup having defeated teams from lower divisions. The C team (John Millward, Shaun Newcomb & Brian Bickell) beat Div 3 outfit Winton YMCA C 6-2, courtesy of a terrific hat-trick from England Veteran Bickell, two wins from Captain Millward and the one from wheelchair-player Newcomb.
The D team (Frank Handy, Gerard Redman & Paul Iliffe) took the same haul of 6 games from Div 5’s Merton K in their 6-1 victory, aided and abetted by a hat-trick from Redman (pictured below) who didn’t drop a set. Iliffe won both of his matches and Captain Handy won his one of out two by the skin of his teeth 21-20, 21-20.
Milton’s most emphatic Cup win came from the J team (Plamen Petrov, John Parkhouse & Mike Roberts) with an 8-1 thumping of Bmth Sports L who play a division lower than them in Div 4. Impressive new signing Petrov scored a hat-trick as did Captain Roberts, but Parkhouse had to settle for a brace.
The K team (Sid Daynes, James Harper & Mike Gent) from Div 5 were as-close-as-this to joining their team mates in the next round of the Cup, but they narrowly lost 4-5 to Div 2’s Ringwood B. 15 year old Harper and stand-in captain Gent had bagged a brace apiece and it fell to Daynes to try to keep his side in the Cup. He got off to a good start by winning his first set 21-15 against the very experienced Chris Morgan to raise Milton’s hopes. That proved a false dawn however as Daynes lost the next two 20-21, 20-21, you can’t get closer than that!
Five New Milton teams were in the draw for Round 1 of the Plate, but the F team (Sylvia Smith, Andrew Stainton & Steve Cheesman) were the only ones to see action as the G, H, L and M teams got byes to Round 2. Unfortunately they won’t be joining their club mates in the next round as the Div 2 outfit lost 2-7 against Bmth Sports M who are struggling in Div 5. Captain Cheesman and Stainton replied for Milton with a win apiece.
The next round of matches are scheduled to be played week commencing 29th January.

NEW MILTON G ARE TOP OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE!
Two of the New Milton Table Tennis Club’s teams suffered relegation in the Bournemouth and District league last season; the G team from Div 2 and the C team from the Premier. Both teams are doing their level best to jump back at the first time of asking, but the G team went into the Christmas break at the top of Div 3.
The G team (Dave Cuddon, Bob Fagan, Terry Jenvey & Chris Pusey) have won all of their matches apart from their narrow 6-4 loss in their derby against the J team, so they will be looking for revenge second time around. Captain Jenvey has led from the front with a 76% winning average, including five hat-tricks, one of them coming against the J team. Cuddon is just behind him on 75%, clearly benefiting from his year’s lay-off, and Pusey and Fagan are on 67% and 57% respectively. The Gees end the year at the top of Div 3 on 34 points with Bournemouth Sports K breathing down their necks on 31 points. Milton beat the Bourne 7-3 in their own back yard first time around, and the return match at Mudeford Wood on 19th February could be a cruncher, along with their return match against the Jays the previous week. Although the C team (Brian Bickell, John Millward & Shaun Newcomb) are placed fifth in Div 1 on 27 points, only one point separates them from Bournemouth Sports D who are second on 28 points. If star veteran player Bickell remains fit and wheelchair player Newcomb’s niggling wrist holds good, the C’s should be able to keep up the pressure for the second round of matches.
The H team (Ian Linney, Lewis Reading, Sylvia Smith, Les Smith & Dave Sutton) won the Div 4 title last year and are more than holding their own in Div 3 as they lie in sixth place on 22 points. Star player Sutton only lost one match all last season and can be very proud of his 76% winning average at the higher level.
With these and other successes in mind, the club members were in a buoyant mood at their Annual Christmas party which was held once again at the Carpenters Arms in Bransgore. A good time was had by all 18 members and guests present, and the raffle raised £50 for the Oakhaven Hospice Trust.
In his traditional after-dinner speech, club secretary Bev Scott-Johns mentioned that the past twelve months had been a mixture of considerable success for the club’s teams and players, but tinged with sadness with the sudden passing of popular member Roy Hobbs in October. Roy had been a member of the club since 2007 and several club members attended his funeral at the Test Valley Crematorium.
Turning to the club’s successes, Bev mentioned the two league promotions last season as well as one of the teams coming runner-up in the Times and Directory Handicap Plate competition. In the Bournemouth and District Individual Tournaments held during March, New Milton players won a club record haul of trophies (nine titles and four runners-up).
For the first time in the club’s history, 12 teams were entered into the Bournemouth & District league for the current season, one more than last season. Terry Jenvey’s G team are currently top of Div 3 and Simon Heaps’ B team are third in the Premier.
Back in May, the club received Clubmark re-accreditation, which is Sport England’s national accreditation scheme for high quality community sports clubs. An accredited club is recognised as a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for participants of all ages, as well as helping parents and carers know that that they are choosing the right club for their young people.

REVENGE FOR L TEAM IN NMTTC DERBY
In the last week of league matches before the Christmas break, the New Milton Table Tennis Club came up with five wins from their ten matches, one of them at the expense of one of their own teams in a local derby.
The L team (Malcolm Douglas, Keith Kensley & Geoff Biggs) beat their M team (Taki Hall, David Brown & Dominic Stainton) 8-2 in a complete reversal of their first round 6-4 defeat in Div 5. Biggs came up with his first hat-trick of the campaign while Douglas and Kensley bagged a brace apiece having both lost to Taki Hall. The doubles would have salvaged a precious point for the M team, but although captain Stuart Burton joined with Hall from the bench, Douglas and Biggs got the better of them to take the maximum four points.
Div 3 saw the table topping G team (Terry Jenvey, Dave Cuddon & Bob Fagan) repeat their first-round 6-4 victory over struggling Bmth Sports J, aided and abetted by Cuddon’s third hat-trick of the campaign, a couple from Fagan and the one from captain Jenvey.
Also in Div 3, the J team (Plamen Petrov, John Parkhouse & Mike Roberts) did the double over basement boys Ringwood C by beating them 8-2 in their own back yard this time. Recent signing Petrov came up with his second hat-trick in three weeks to go along with a couple of wins apiece from captain Roberts and Parkhouse.
The D team (Frank Handy, Gerard Redman & Rob Blackmore) have been struggling in Div 1 of late, but they did the double over fellow strugglers Lynwood B with a precious 6-4 win at the Grange. Redman came up with his second hat-trick of the campaign, Blackmore bagged a brace and captain Handy chipped in with the one win.
New Milton’s best win and indeed best turn-around came in Div 4 as the K team (Sid Daynes [pictured below], James Harper & Mike Gent) whitewashed Shamrock B 10-0 having lost 7-3 to them first time around. This excellent win moves the Kays off the bottom of the division and consigns their victims to the basement instead.

DERBY DEJA-VU FOR NEW MILTON TABLE TENNIS CLUB
The second round of the Bournemouth & District Table Tennis league programme got underway last week, with the New Milton Club repeating their opening week’s haul of five wins from ten matches. Two of those wins came at the expense of their own teams in their local derbies, with the same teams emerging victorious.
The Premier’s B team did the double over their A team and were gifted three games and a point as the A team were a player short. This helped the Bees to improve on their first-round 6-4 result with a 7-3 win this time around. The other derby saw the table-topping G team (Chris Pusey, Dave Cuddon & Terry Jenvey) repeat their first-round 8-2 win over their H team (Dave Sutton, Ian Linney & Sylvia Smith) in Div 3. Captain Jenvey scored a hat-trick, as did Cuddon but Pusey lost to Sylvia Smith, the only singles reply from the Aitches who also won the doubles.
Div 2 saw the F team (Steve Cheesman, Ben Greene & Malcolm Floyd) come up with their best win of the campaign as they hammered basement boys Bmth Sports G 9-1 in their own back yard, an improvement on their first-round 6-4 victory. Club Treasurer & Press Secretary Floyd (pictured below) was celebrating his first hat-trick of the season and indeed his first for three seasons, and Greene joined him in a treble. Captain Cheesman went two sets up against Bourne’s Simon Marriner in pursuit of his own treble, but his bad back got the better of him and he went on to lose 2-3.
The J team have certainly received a boost after signing up Plamen Petrov as his brace of wins, combined with captain Mike Robert’s first hat-trick of the campaign helped them to reverse their first-round 8-2 hammering at the hands of Div 3 high-flyers Winton YMCA D. The doubles were needed for the win and Petrov & Roberts combined clinically to take them in three straight sets to secure the 6-4 victory.
In Div 5, the L team (Keith Kensley, Malcolm Douglas & Paul Owen) did the double over Bmth Sports M with a 7-3 win at Chapel Gate. After just missing out on his hat-trick last week, Kensley (pictured below) did the business this week to go along with a brace apiece from Douglas and Owen.

DISAPPOINTING WEEK FOR NEW MILTON TABLE TENNIS CLUB
The New Milton Table Tennis Club could only come up with three wins out of their ten matches in the final week of the first round of matches in the Bournemouth and District league. There were five matches with close 6-4 scorelines but the Milton teams were on the wrong side of all of them.
The G team were relegated from Div 2 last season but look set to return at the first time of asking as they are four points clear at the top of Div 3. In a 7-3 victory over Merton F in their own back yard, captain Terry Jenvey led from the front with his fourth hat-trick of the campaign, Bob Fagan bagged a brace and Chris Pusey chipped in with the one win.
After failing to win their last five matches in Div 1, the D team (Paul Iliffe, Gerard Redman & Rob Blackmore) beat basement boys Merton D 7-3 in their own back yard. Blackmore came up with his third hat-trick of the season and Redman and Iliffe bagged a brace apiece. The doubles were needed for the four points but unfortunately Iliffe & Blackmore were outmatched by the Merton pairing of Clayton Fitzpatrick & Pete Hodson.
Div 3 saw the J team (Adam Titcombe, Svet Ignatov & Plamen Petrov) come up with their best win of the campaign as they thumped mid-tablers Winton YMCA C 8-2 home at the Grange. Ignatov (pictured below) came up with his first hat-trick of the season and was joined in a debut treble by exciting new signing Petrov whilst 14 year old Titcombe chipped in with the one win. The doubles were needed to secure the maximum four points and Ignatov & Petrov duly obliged.

MIXED CUP FORTUNES FOR NMTTC TEAMS
There was a break in the Bournemouth & District Table Tennis league programme last week, with play given over to Round 1 of the annual Times & Directory Handicap Cup competition. Out of the eight New Milton teams in the draw, two of them had walkovers to Round 2 because their opposition were unable to put out teams. Milton won only two of the five matches actually played, one of them at the expense of one of their own teams in a local derby.
The D team (Gerard Redman, Rob Blackmore & Paul Iliffe) from Div 1 demolished Div 3 basement boys Ringwood C 8-1 in their own back yard courtesy of hat-tricks from Redman and Blackmore and a brace from Iliffe.
The local derby was between the H team (Ian Linney, Sylvia Smith & Lewis Reading) from Div 3 and the K team (Lynn Willrich [pictured below], Sid Daynes & James Harper) who are currently bottom of Div 4. Linney got the Aitches off to a good start by beating Kay’s captain Willrich who had a +4 start. But then Daynes (+3) and 15 year old Harper (+7) beat Smith and Reading respectively, and Willrich (+5) eventually got the better of Smith in a tough ladies singles to put the K team 3-1 ahead. Linney got his side back in the match by beating Harper (+8) and then Reading nicked it from Daynes (+5) 21-20 in the deciding set to level things off at 3-3. That was the H team’s high water mark however, as Harper easily saw off Smith with his +7 start and captain Willrich (+6) disposed of Reading to take her team into the next round.
Sylvia Smith fared better later in the week as she played up a division for the F team along with 18 year old Andrew Stainton and Malcolm Floyd in their Div 2 derby against Ringwood B, but still ended up on the losing side as they went down 4-5. Smith and Stainton received similar starts to bag a brace apiece, but Floyd drew a blank as he really struggled with the starts he had to give to the opposition.
Div 3 leaders, the G team (Chris Pusey, Dave Cuddon & Bob Fagan) lost 5-3 to fellow Div 3 side Winton YMCA C at Mudeford Wood, and the L team (Geoff Biggs, Chris Courage & Mike Melaniphy) from Div 5 lost to Div 4 outfit Bmth Sports L 6-3 at the Grange. Full results details are below:-

So the C and J teams go through to Round 2 of the Cup by default, and the D and K teams go through by feat of arms. However, the losing F, G, H and L teams live to fight another day as they join Stuart Burton’s M team in the consolation “Plate” competition.
HIGHS AND LOWS FOR NMTTC TEAMS!
The New Milton Table Tennis Club won five out of their ten matches in the Bournemouth & District league last week, one of the wins coming at the expense of one of their own teams in a Division 1 derby. The A team were hammered 9-1 by soar-away Premier leaders Bmth Sports A and the J team were whitewashed 10-0 by Bmth Sports K in Div 3. The E team were walloped 8-2 by Div 2 leaders Winton YMCA B and the K team likewise by Div 4 high-fliers Merton H.
In contrast, the H team came up with their first maximum-pointer of the campaign as they beat Div 3 basement boys Ringwood C 8-2 courtesy of hat-tricks from Lewis Reading and the still unbeaten Dave Sutton. The G team (Chris Pusey, Terry Jenvey & Dave Cuddon) cemented their place at the top of Div 3 by beating second-placed Winton YMCA D 7-3 at the Grange. The B team are second in the Premier and beat bottom-dwellers Ringwood A 7-3 thanks to trebles from captain Simon Heaps (pictured below) and John Hook. The F team (Andrew Stainton, Elliott Storr-Smith & Ben Greene) had to manage without Captain Steve Cheesman but still managed to beat Merton E 6-4, aided and abetted by 18 year old Stainton’s first hat-trick of the campaign.
The C team (John Millward, Shaun Newcomb & Brian Bickell) won their Div 1 derby against their D team (Frank Handy, Gerard Redman & Rob Blackmore) by 6-4 to take second place from Bmth Sports D who were hammered 9-1 by Merton C. The impressive Blackmore kept the Dees in it with his second hat-trick of the campaign and Redman got the better of wheelchair player Newcomb.
