“Plate” Disappointment for New Milton E (T&D Plate Final)
The E team did fantastically well to reach the Times and Directory Handicap “Plate” final which took place at Merton on Wednesday 17th April. However, their opposition, Bmth Sports H didn’t play like a team who have just been relegated from Div 1 and beat Milton by 5-1. There was a large number of spectators, including four from New Milton. There was E team captain Bev of course who had dropped himself for the evening, Shaun, Malcolm, and it was good to see Brian Vibert.
At times, the event had a bit of an intra-club feel to it as Bourne’s captain J-D Marshall often practices at New Milton. It was a very friendly evening, played in a very good spirit, and a delighted J-D was to be seen celebrating at the Carpenters Arms later on with pal Nolan George, witnessed by Shaun and Malcolm.

Tournament Secretary’s Report
The ‘Plate’ competition was won by Bmth Sports H (Div 1) beating New Milton E (Div 3) 5-1 in the final played on Wednesday 17th April. Bmth Sports H represented by J-D Marshall (+12 handicap), Daniel Prakesh (+14) and Becky Kuzu (+15) and New Milton E (Div 3) was represented by David Sutton (+18), Max Doohan (+18) andSimon Golding (+18).
Although the match score looks an easy win for Bmth Sports this was not the case with four of the six matches going to the final game. In the first match J-D playing David was easily beaten in the first game 21-31 but gradually became more consistent with his forehand topspin, narrowly winning the second game 31-29 and finally the third 31-28. Daniel won the second match beating Max 31-23 and 31-24. However, the third match between Becky and Simon was the match of the night. Becky won the first game 31-28, Simon coming back strongly in the second with more controlled hitting 25-31, with the third and final game reaching 30-30 all with some good controlled topspin and blocking from both players. Simon then produced a good long service but Becky hit a topspin forehand return past Simon to win the game 31-30 enabling Bmth Sports to take a 3-0 lead. Daniel then played David in a humorous and well contested match. The match swayed one way and then the other before Daniel finally winning 31-29, 26-31 and 31-29. J-D then played Simon with J-D playing a ‘captains innings’ and being very consistent with his forehand topspin winning 31-25 and 31-26 enabling Bmth Sports to take a 5-0 winning lead.
Becky played the final match against a determined Max who provided some good defensive play in a very tight encounter, with Becky losing 28-31, 31-29 and 29-31 which made the match score 5-1. The match was played in the most enjoyable, humorous and friendly manner and credit must go to all the players.
