Another Brilliant Year For New Milton Table Tennis Club (Press Report)

New Milton Table Tennis Club members celebrated another fantastic season at their combined AGM and Presentation Evening at the Mudeford Wood Community Centre on 16th July . There was still a buzz from the recent news that the club had been upgraded from a 3-Star PremierClub rating to 4-Star by the English Table Tennis Association. This makes the club the highest rated club in the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis Association.

In January, the club achieved “Ability Club” status in recognition of its capability and commitment to “actively working with disabled people”, which helped towards its case for the higher star rating. Another significant milestone for the club was the launch of their own website which was designed by Junior Representative Andrew Daish with help from the club’s committee. The website shows that the club has eleven UKCC coaches including a specialist disability coach. Two of the club’s three UKCC Level 2 coaches (Shaun Newcomb and James Lewis) are currently working towards the highest national level, UKCC Level 3.

In addition to these achievements, club secretary Bev Scott-Johns reported on a very satisfactory and enjoyable season in the Bournemouth and District league. The club increased its number of teams from 9 to 10 making it the second biggest club in the league. Although none of the teams finished in the promotion stakes, none of the teams were relegated either, so this was a period of consolidation for the club after the unprecedented success in the previous season. Bev also reported on the very successful club tournaments, opining that the Finals Night was the best that he could remember in all his years as a member of the club. He particularly thanked Simon Golding from SGTV Productions Ltd and helpers for recording the event on TV cameras, another “first” for the club. Simon’s work commitments allowing, the eagerly awaited DVD should be available in another month or so.

The club was relieved when after heavy campaigning, the Mudeford Wood Charitable Trust took over the day to day running of the centre from the council on 1st April 2012, which should hopefully secure the club’s main playing venue for the foreseeable future. The club was also heavily involved in the New Milton Pageant of Sport and the National “Ping” Project, with the two table tennis tables proving very popular in New Milton rec.

The club’s Coaching Co-ordinator James Lewis reported that the club’s coaching activities continued to expand, with the coaching sessions at Arnewood School still proving to be very popular and will resume again in September. James paid special tribute to 11 year old Matthew Daish who moved up from Division 5 to Division 3 this season in the Bournemouth & District league where he came top in the averages table. He won the Under 11s National Schools Championship at Doncaster and finished this season in third place of the ETTA’s Boys Under 12 national rankings. He also won the Bournemouth One Star Cadet and Junior titles, came runner-up in the Sussex One Star tournament and 3rd in the Under 12s National Championships held at the University of Wolverhampton, having lost to the number one seed and eventual tournament winner. Older brother Peter also had an excellent season so they were uniquely jointly awarded the James Lewis Trophy for Most Improved Player.

Club Treasurer Malcolm Floyd reported on a healthy financial position which included a grant of £1250 gratefully received from the “Accentuate” Programme. This will be used to buy two wheelchair-friendly table tennis tables and other equipment ready for the new season.

The club’s officers were returned unopposed: Shaun Newcomb (Chair & Development Officer), Bev Scott-Johns (Secretary), Malcolm Floyd (Treasurer) and James Lewis (Welfare Officer). Dave Sutton and Brian Vibert stood down from the committee and thanks were recorded for their excellent past services. Phil Handy joined standing members Julie Smillie (Minutes Secretary), Steve Hemmings and Andrew Daish (Junior Representative) on the committee. With the AGM out of the way, club President Bob Fagan presented the club’s annual trophies:-

Open Singles: Phil Handy, Runner-up Steve Hemmings

Handicap Singles: Phil Handy, Runner-up Peter Daish

Vets 40+: Steve Hemmings, Runner-up Julie Smillie

Under 40s: Peter Daish, Runner-up Zac Dowling

Juniors: Matthew Daish, Runner-up Zac Dowling

Doubles: Bob Fagan & Ian Linney, Runners-up Roy Hobbs & Dave Sutton

James Lewis Trophy for Most Improved Player: Jointly awarded to Peter & Matthew Daish

Doris Marshall Memorial Plate for Club Person of the Year: Bev Scott-Johns

The club now eagerly looks forward to the 2012/2013 season, but is always on the lookout for new members, from novices to experience players. Any reader wishing to join a friendly and vibrant club should give Bev Scott-Johns a call on 01425 619552.

Pageant of Sport

Just to remind everyone that this weekend, the 21st July, is the Pageant of Sport on New Milton Recreation Ground. The event is from 10.30am until 5pm but there are two big slots for the club between 11 and 12 noon and then later in the afternoon, I think at about 3pm.
Throughout the day we will have a table to advertise the club, if anyone can spare half an hour or so to man the table and give out leaflets etc that would be really appreciated.
It will be a great day so please do come along and support your club and look at the other attractions on offer too.

NMTTC AGM/PRESENTATION EVENING – MONDAY 16TH JULY

Just a reminder that the club’s AGM/Presentation Evening takes place at Mudeford Wood this coming Monday at 8 o’clock. In addition to the AGM which hopefully won’t take long, the annual trophies will be presented and there will be practice either side of the proceedings. There is a proposed increase in annual subscriptions (up £5 to £35 per annum) for seniors, which will hopefully receive the support of those in attendance.

Copies of the Annual Accounts, Treasurer’s Report, Secretary’s Report and last year’s Minutes have already been sent out via Malcolm’s email distribution list. Bev has also supplied copies to some members who do not have email access, but copies are available on request from Malcolm on 01425 620370.

All members are welcome to come along to partake in the AGM, applaud the trophy winners and have a knock, all for the princely sum of £2 seniors, £1.50 for juniors (bargain!).

Ping Project comes to New Milton

To All Members -Your Club Needs You!

New Milton has been chosen as one of the New Forest venues to have some outdoor tables for the public to use; this is part of the Ping Project, an incentive designed to promote sport within the community.

Two tables will be positioned by the skate park, next to the recreation centre, and spare bats and balls will be held at Bo’s Chinese Herbal Medicine shop.  The tables will be there for a month.  Members of the public are going to be encouraged to play but of course it would be really helpful to have some ‘experts’ to hand.  If any club member is available to help/encourage/give information about NMTTC/coach at any time it would be fantastic, and if you could wear your New Milton Club shirt that would also help with promoting our club.

We particulary need help on these days, Saturday 14th July 11-3pm, Saturday 21st July (same day as The Pageant of Sport) 10-4pm, Wednesday 25th July 10-2pm and Wednesday 1st August 1-3pm.

If you can only spare an hour during that time it would be greatly appreciated.

Please do try and go along, we are always looking for new members and you just might be the person who persuades someone to join!

If you need any more information or if you think you can spare some time to help, please contact James Lewis on

Table Tennis at the movies – July 18th – 6:30pm

Dear NMTTC members,

I am a member of the Picture House Cinema group, the one I go to being the very pleasant “Harbour Lights” Picture House located in Ocean Village, Southampton, SO14 3TL. (0871 902 5733). I get regular bulletins of upcoming films and noticed the following in my recent bulletin:

PING PONG (12A) Director: Hugh Hartford (UK 2012 76mins)

Table Tennis Table on-site!

Pensioners from across the planet compete in the World Over 80s Table Tennis Championship in Inner Mongolia. Eight players with 703 years between them guide us through the extraordinary world of life at the table, sometimes ruthless, sometimes emotional, always entertaining.  With intimate and candid portraits of the players’ lives, Ping Pong explores the hope, regret and intimacy of growing old.

I don’t know how entertaining the movie is going to be but it sounds as though it may be fun and the fact that they are having a table on-site made me wonder if it had been tied in with the “PING” project – I asked my friendly receptionist at the Harbour Lights but she thought it was just part of the film’s marketing. I have also called the ETTA and am awaiting a call back from the relevant person; at the very least it might be an opportunity to place leaflets in the cinemas across the country, near the tables (with the permission of the Picture House Group) to advise people that if they enjoyed the experience and would like to try / come back to playing TT, then there is a friendly club network who would be very welcoming.

As a club, we could always use the evening as another impromptu social evening, perhaps combining the movie with a visit to a local restaurant thereafter – what do you think? For those who don’t know, the Harbour Lights has a nice bar and (weather permitting) a lovely outdoor terrace overlooking the Ocean Village marina. If you need further incentive, they serve Hoegaarden, Staropramen, Bombay Sapphire and great coffee / cakes…

Send me an e-mail if you’re up for it (book direct as I have already), whether that’s just for the film or if you’d like a post movie supper. We could meet up around 6pm in the bar and have a quick knock….loser buys the beer!!Image

NEW MILTON CLUB AMONGST THE HONOURS!

The recent annual Presentation Evening of the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis Association was attended by seventeen members and guests of the New Milton Table Tennis Club. Although not such a spectacular year as last season, club members were still amongst the honours this year.

The A team’s Steve Hemmings (pictured below) was there to collect his Veteran’s 50+ title and he also shared in the Trevor Parry trophy for the best match of the Individuals Tournaments. This was awarded to Hemmings and Wei-Jun Liang (Bournemouth Sports) for their display in the Vets 50+ final. Hemmings also picked up the Times & Directory Handicap Cup runners-up trophies for himself and the rest of his A team (Brian Vibert, Phil Handy and Brian Bickell).

The B team’s Julie Smillie was there to collect her two Doubles runners-up trophies. The F team’s Sylvia Smith joined her to collect their Women’s Doubles runners-up trophies, and Smillie also picked up the Mixed Doubles runners-up awards for herself and team-mate Zoltan Karib-Barath who was not able to attend.

Before the presentation of the trophies, association President Harold Feltham gave name checks to the youngsters who had performed well this season. Amongst the accolades was Milton’s rising star, eleven year old Matthew Daish. Daish moved up from Div 5 last year to Div 3 this season and came top in the winning averages. He won the Bournemouth One-Star Cadet and Junior titles and came runner-up in the Sussex One-Star tournament. He also won the Under-11 National School’s championship and ended the season with third place in the England Table Tennis Association (ETTA) national rankings.

Daish’s older brother Simon gained his UKCC Level 1 coaching certificate this season as did veteran Sibyl Bartlett. Sibyl’s table tennis experience dates back to her teenage years and has continued until now, culminating in the acquisition, in her eightieth year, of a Level 1 Coaching Certificate.

Also mentioned in despatches was club veteran Brian Bickell who received his Vetts England call-up to play against the Czech Republic in the European Championship. Bickell with his partner Colin Dyke won the bronze medal in the doubles event.

The New Milton Club entered 10 teams in the league this season, and although none of the teams gained promotion, at least none of the teams were relegated. This season can therefore be regarded as one of consolidation, ready for greater things hopefully next season. Any reader interested in playing table tennis competitively or just for fun should contact Club Secretary Bev Scott-Johns on 01425 619552.
