Division 4 in the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis League proved a happy hunting ground for the New Milton Club last week as their G and H teams both recorded wins.

The G team dusted themselves down after two successive heavy defeats and did the double over basement boys Bmth Sports L with a 8-2 win down at the Mudeford Wood Community Centre. Man of the match Lewis Reading (pictured below) returned to the club after a few years’ break and is really doing the business for his team and came up with his fourth hat-trick of the campaign. New signing Graham Underwood was unlucky not to join Reading in a treble as he lost 8-11 in the fifth end to Bourne’s much improved Maggie White. Captain Les Smith also lost over five ends to Ms White to settle for a brace. The doubles were needed for maximum points and Reading and Underwood duly obliged.

The H team are really mounting a bid for promotion to Div 3 and did their cause no harm as they beat Merton K for the second time, this time by 7-3 home at the Grange. New signing Paul Iliffe is now scoring hat-tricks for fun and came up with his sixth treble out of his seven matches. Dave Strike who returned to the club after working away for a few years accrued his fifth hat-trick, then joined Iliffe to take the doubles in three straight sets.

Milton’s only other win came in the heady heights of the Premier as the A team walloped the struggling Merton B 8-2 in their own back yard. Russell Wilson, another player returning to the fold came up with his second hat-trick of the campaign, and captain Steve Hemmings and Brian Vibert bagged a brace apiece. The New Milton Table Tennis Club repeated its last week’s haul of four wins out of ten in the Bournemouth and District league, two of them coming from full houses and the other two with 9-1 scorelines.

The two 10-0 victories came in Div 4 as the table-topping F team reprised their first round whitewash of struggling Winton YMCA C with the same players doing the damage; Mike Roberts, Ian Linney and Steve Cheesman. The H team improved on their first-round 7-3 home win over Shamrock B by walloping them 10-0 at their place, thanks to hat-tricks from Paul Iliffe, John Childs and 14 year old Elliott Storr-Smith.

The J team came ascloseasthis to achieving their own full house in Div 5 over Nimrod B having lost 4-6 down at their place but it was the doubles that cost them. Leading 9-0 thanks to a captain’s hat-trick from Malcolm Douglas (pictured below) and their season’s first hat-tricks from Mike Gent and Geoff Biggs, Douglas & Gent lost over five ends to the undaunted Nimrod pairing of Jim Vials and Lyn Noakes.

Both of Milton’s teams in Div 1 are struggling, but the C team reversed a first-round 4-6 defeat at the hands of second-from-bottom Ringwood B by beating them 9-1 chez Ringwood. Captain Frank Handy led from the front with a hat-trick, Gerard Redman joined him in a treble, and Andrew Daish bagged a brace. Although still third from bottom this enabled Milton to widen the gap to 8 points on their victims.

Although languishing at the bottom of Div 1, the D team managed to avoid defeat for the first time this season as they held Bmth Sports C to a 5-5 draw having lost 4-6 to them first time round. Clive Pitts played up from Div 2 and played brilliantly to win two matches and was joined in his brace by captain Jenvey. Roy Hobbs is now back playing after surgery and did really well to add one more to the tally after a gruelling five-ender against Bourne’s Dave Law who had already beaten Jenvey. The New Milton Table Tennis Club came up with four wins in the Bournemouth and District league last week, albeit three of them came at the expense of their own teams in their three local derbies.

The derbies all went the way of the form book and indeed it was a case of deja vu all over again for the Premier’s A & B teams and Div 4’s F & G teams as the results were the same as the first time round.

In the Premier, the A team beat the B team 8-2 for the second time, both teams fielding the same players. Wunderkind Matt Daish (pictured below) repeated his first round hat-trick, Brian Vibert scored a treble and Russell Wilson added one more to the tally, having lost to the B’s John Millward and John Hook. The doubles could have salvaged a point for the Bees but it wasn’t to be as Shaun Newcomb & John Hook lost to the formidable combination of Daish & Vibert.

Div 4 saw the table-topping F team repeat their 9-1 hammering of their G team courtesy of hat-tricks from Mike Roberts and the unbeaten Steve Cheesman and a brace from Ian Linney who lost to Eddie Tompkins. Lewis Reading came very close to getting the F’s off to a good start as he took the first two ends off Roberts, but he lost the next three 9-11, 5-11, 9-11 to eventually go home empty-handed.

The other derby came in Div 5 where the J team improved on a first-round draw by beating their K team 7-3, with Mike Gent, Geoff Biggs and captain Malcolm Douglas all bagging braces. John Parkhouse did likewise for his K team, only losing to Biggs whom captain Stuart Burton managed to beat for his sole victory.

There was a break in the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis league programme as last week was given over to the Annual Times & Directory Handicap Cup competition. Five of the New Milton Club Teams were involved in Round 2 of the Cup, and three of their teams were involved in the “Plate”, the club emerging with five creditable wins for their pains.

In Round 2 of the Cup proper, the C team from Div 1 beat Winton YMCA C (Div 4) at the YMCA 6-3 despite Milton being a player short, with hat-tricks from captain Frank Handy and stalwart Gerard Redman.  Frank is pictured below in between Peter Daish (left) and Bobo Jiang.

The Div 2’s E team booked their place in Round 3 of the Cup at the expense of their club mates in the H team from Div 4 with a 5-3 win down at the Grange. It was all over at 5-2 as Paul Nelson clinched his hat-trick but John Childs then joined his team mates with a win over Danny Williams.

Div 4 leaders the F team travelled to Chapel Gate and scraped a hard earned 5-4 win over Bmth Sports H from Div 3. It was poised at 4-4, then Steve Cheesman remained unbeaten in all competitions to beat Bourne’s Peter Richardson over three sets having caused some temporary jitters by dropping the second.

The K team (Div 5) and Broadstone E (Div 3) are both struggling in their respective divisions but the Kays had it won at 5-2, although Broadstone made the scoreline a bit more respectable by winning the last two matches making it 5-4 for Milton.

Round 1 of the consolation “Plate” competition saw a true local derby as the A team took on their Premier club mates in the B team down at the Mudeford Wood Community Centre. The Bees were out to avenge their 2-8 defeat in the league and just managed to do so with a 5-4 victory. It was delicately poised at 4-4 then Bee’s John Millward completed his hat-trick having not dropped a set all evening.

The only match where a Milton team didn’t emerge with a win came as Div 1 basement boys the D team lost 3-6 to Div 4 high-flyers Bmth Sports K. At 1-4 down, Dave Cuddon kept Milton in the match by beating Bourne’s very handy Max Otton in two straight sets, but they couldn’t build on this as Chris Pusey narrowly lost to Zeta Winter making it 2-5 to exit the Plate.

The G team had a bye in Round 1 of the Plate so they will go into the Round 2 draw with their club mates in the B team who did it the hard way. Full result details are below:-

The New Milton Table Tennis Club got off to a rip-roaring start to the New Year with an impressive eight wins out of ten in the Bournemouth and District league, the club’s highest haul so far this season.

Three of the wins were 10-0 full-houses with the Premier’s A team being gifted theirs as Broadstone A were unable to put out a team. The other two whitewashes came in in Div 4 as the G team socked it to Merton K in their own back yard courtesy of hat-tricks from Eddie Tompkins, Lewis Reading and Malcolm Douglas who was playing up from Div 5. Douglas was at the wrong end of a whitewash in Div 5 as his J team went down 0-10 for the second time against the table-topping Winton YMCA D.

The H team came up with their Div 4 full house at home at the Grange School over the struggling Winton YMCA C thanks to hat-tricks from Dave Strike, Paul Iliffe and fourteen year old Elliott Storr-Smith (pictured below) , his second of the campaign.

Div 4 also saw the F team tighten their grip at the top of the table by beating Nimrod B 6-4 for the second time, this time at the Mudeford Wood Community Centre. The unbeaten Steve Cheesman came up with his seventh hat-trick of the campaign and Sylvia Smith and Mike Roberts chipped in with one win apiece. As with their first round match, the doubles were needed for the win and Cheesman and Roberts did the business in three straight sets. Full results are below:-

The second round of matches in the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis league got underway last week just before the Christmas break and the New Milton club repeated their opening week’s haul of just two wins out of eight.

The unbeaten F team (pictured below) tightened their grip at the top of Div 4 by repeating their 8-2 victory over basement boys Bmth Sports L courtesy of hat-tricks from Sylvia Smith and the unbeaten Steve Cheesman. In Div 5, the K team put more daylight between themselves and bottom-dwellers Elec-trick with their own 8-2 victory down at the Grange.

It was deja-vu all over again as the G team drew 5-5 for the second time against their H team in Div 4. The H team looked to have gained the upper hand as they led 5-3 thanks to a hat-trick from Dave Strike and a brace from John Childs. However, the G’s Graham Underwood then saw off opposing captain Lynn Willrich in three straight sets in the final singles of the evening, needing the doubles to force the draw. Underwood and Eddie Tompkins took the first end 11-9 but Strike and Childs then won the second 11-8 to make it level-pegging. Strike and Childs then won the third 11-9 to go into the lead but Underwood & Tompkins won the next two 11-9 to take the doubles to make it honours even again.

Of the club’s four defeats, the heaviest came in Div 1 as the D team remain firmly rooted to the foot of the division on four points as they lost 0-10 to unbeaten leaders Lynwood A. Full result details are below:- Read the rest of this entry →

The New Milton Table Tennis Club marked the end of the first round of matches in the Bournemouth and District league with four draws out of their eight matches, two of the ties being forced through the doubles. The other results were two wins and two defeats.

In the Premier, the B team drew 5-5 against Merton B at Mudeford Wood courtesy of a brace apiece from super-sub Gerard Redman (pictured below), who was playing up from Div 1, and regular John Hook who combined with John Millward to win the doubles.

Div 2 saw the E team also draw against a Merton team at Mudeford Wood, but the doubles would have given them a victory over Merton F. Peter Daish came up with his fourth hat-trick of the campaign and Simon Golding and Clive Pitts chipped in with one apiece to make it 5-4. Golding and Pitts struggled in the first end of the doubles, losing 2-11, then combined more fluently but still lost the next two 10-12 and 8-11 to settle for the draw.

The club’s other two draws both came in Div 4 where the table-topping F team lost their 100% record as they drew against close rivals Bmth Sports K down at Chapel Gate. It could have been much worse as Milton, who were missing star player Steve Cheesman through injury, went 0-4 down but won four out of the next five singles matches making it 4-5. Captain Malcolm Nash paired up with Ian Linney for the doubles and they won the first two ends 11-5 and 11-9, wobbled a bit in the third to lose 8-11, then got it back together to take the fourth 11-4 to secure a hard-fought draw. After the match, a relieved Captain Nash commented “In truth it felt like we had won and we kept the status quo with our rivals and remain unbeaten in the first half of the season. We did not want to lose our top spot on the final game of the first half, but a close call to a good team”.

The H team’s draw came away against Nimrod B where the doubles would have given Milton the victory. Dave Strike and John Childs bagged a brace apiece and captain Lynn Willrich added one more to the tally to make it 5-4. Milton were quite hopeful of the win as Strike and Childs had won their previous doubles matches, but they narrowly lost the first two ends 9-11, 9-11. They rallied to sneak the third 14-12 but lost their way a bit in the fourth to lose 7-11 and stomach the draw.

The club’s two wins came at the opposite ends of the league as the A team whitewashed Bmth Sports B 10-0 in their own back yard in the Premier, and down in Div 5 the J team remain unbeaten over five matches by beating Nimrod D 7-3 home at the Grange.  Full results details are below:- Read the rest of this entry →

There was a break in the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis league with play given over to Round 1 of the Annual Times and Directory Handicap Cup competition last week. The New Milton Club had six teams playing in this round and emerged with four wins and two defeats.

Both the E and F teams had won their Preliminary Round matches and did likewise in Round 1 to go through to the next round. The E team took on Div 2 fellows Merton G and beat them by a comfortable 5-1 away at Southbourne (the E team’s Bev Scott-Johns (captain) and Clive Pitts are pictured below), but the F team from Div 4 had the more emphatic 7-0 victory against Div 1’s Bmth Sports C home at Mudeford Wood. The F’s Steve Cheeseman and Ian Linney have carried their unbeaten league form into their cup matches and Mike Roberts scored a hat-trick on the night.

The B, D, H and K teams all had byes through to Round 1, but only the H and K teams managed to win through to Round 2. The H team, who normally ply their trade in Div 5 took on Div 1 high-flyers Ringwood A and beat them 6-2 home at the Grange, Somerford, aided and abetted by an impressive hat-trick from Paul Iliffe. Also at the Grange, the K team entertained Div 5 fellows Shamrock C and beat them 6-3 courtesy of a brace apiece from captain Stuart Burton, John Parkhouse and Andrew Stainton.

The Premier’s B team took on a team from the opposite end of the league in Div 5, Winton YMCA D and were comprehensively beaten by 1-8. It was all over at 0-5 but John Hook avoided the whitewash by beating Winton’s star player Matt Ryan in two straight sets.

Div 1’s D team struggled with the handicaps against Bmth Sports H (Div 3) as they lost 1-7 away at Chapel Gate, captain Terry Jenvey picking up the consolation for Milton. Malcolm Floyd came close to adding one more to the scorecard as he caught up at 19-19 in the final set against Bourne’s John Crockett. However, Crockett then got a vicious net cord to make it 20-19 and then won the next point to deprive Floyd of a personal consolation.

The losing B and D teams live to fight another day, however, as they join their A and G teams in the consolation “Plate” competition which will be played Week Commencing 18th January 2016. Full result details are below:-
