BLEAK WEEK FOR NEW MILTON! (WEEK 12 MATCHES)
The New Milton Table Tennis Club’s teams returned to action in the Bournemouth & District league after the Christmas break and could only muster one win out of their eleven matches. Even that win came at the expense of one of their own teams as the E team beat the C team in the second of their local derbies.
The Nimrod club lived up to its biblical name as its three teams did the collective double over Milton’s H, J & K teams, only dropping one point in the process.
However, some good individual performances shone through the gloom as hat-tricks from Simon Golding and Mike Roberts helped rescue a point for the G and J teams respectively, and Ian Linney’s treble helped secure a draw for his F team. The unbeaten Gerard Redman’s treble helped his E team assume bragging rights over the C team as they improved on their first round draw with a 7-3 win over their club mates. A photo of Gerard, a veritable study in concentration, appears below:

THE E’S ARE TOP OF THE TREE! (WEEK 11 LEAGUE TABLES)
It is with a mixture of pleasure and pain that the New Milton Table Tennis Club takes stock of its 11 teams’ performances in the first half of the Bournemouth and District League. The league tables below portray the contrasting fortunes as the clubs took a breather over the Christmas break.
The success story comes from the E team in Div 2, comprising captain Frank Handy, Bobo Jiang, Gerard Redman and the brothers Daish (Andrew, Simon & Peter). As the G team they won the Div 3 title last season and are now sitting pretty at the top of Div 2, albeit on superior games difference, having only lost one of their matches. Also in Div 2, the C team (captain Dave Cuddon, Malcolm Floyd, Svet Ignatov & Matt Winter) are just deprived of third place by games difference, and the D team (captain Terry Jenvey, Bob Fagan, Roy Hobbs & Chris Pusey) are just behind them at 5th position.
The table-topping E team are pictured below l-r Peter Daish, captain Frank Handy & Bobo Jiang. Not included in the picture are Andrew & Simon Daish and Gerard Redman.
Up in the heady heights of the Premier league, the A team (captain Steve Hemmings, Ben Cawston, Matthew Daish, Phil Handy & Umit Kaya) are more than holding their own in the highest echelon as they lie third out of six teams. 13 year old Matthew Daish has proved to be a revelation as he moved up from Div 1 and currently has a 61% winning average in the Premier. SHAUN “MANAGES” BRONZE GONG IN HONG KONG!
DERBY DELIGHT FOR SOME! (WEEK 11 MATCHES)
Eight of the New Milton Table Tennis Club’s teams were involved in local derbies in the Bournemouth and District League last week. The only team to face opposition from outside of the club was the Premier’s A team who picked up an excellent 9-1 victory over Winton YMCA A, including hat-tricks from captain Steve Hemmings and teenager Matthew Daish.
The clash between the C and D teams in Division 2 resulted in what is probably the longest ever table tennis match to take place down at the Mudeford Wood Community Centre. All of the matches apart from two went all the way to five ends including three 11-13 scorelines which all went the way of the D team. The C’s Malcolm Floyd was on the wrong end of two of these as he drew his first blank of the season as his team lost 4-6. The victorious D team are pictured below (l-r Chris Pusey, Bobbie Fagan & Captain Terry Jenvey).
In Div 3, the G team beat the F team 7-3 aided and abetted by Clive Pitts’ first hat-trick of the campaign. In Div 4, the J team overturned the form book to beat the H team 6-4 thanks largely Mike Roberts’ fourth hat-trick of the season.
Div 5 saw the K team stick with the form book as they beat their L team 3-7 in their fourth win of the campaign. Lynn Willrich threatened to come up with her first hat-trick in her last league match but this week she did the deed. Alex Whitehead joined her in a treble and promising recent signing Lisa McGivney came up with her first win in only her second league outing. A TEAM’S CUP PLAN IS COMING TOGETHER! (T&D ROUND 1)
There was a break in the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis League programme last week as the week was given over to Round 1 of the Annual Times and Directory Handicap Cup Competition. Six of the New Milton Club’s teams took part, with two of them involved in a local derby.
The B team beat their clubmates in the L team and go through to Round 2 with the A and E teams who won their matches. Unfortunately the D and J teams both lost 2-7 to Lynwood A and Bmth Sports E respectively.
The Div 1’s B team (Shaun Newcomb, John Millward & Julie Smillie) looked to have had the toughest prospect as they faced their L team (Div 5) who were still on a high from their Preliminary Round victory. Captain Newcomb and Millward (both playing off a handicap of +12) and Smillie (+13) had to cope with very large differentials in the shape of Sue Wootton-Freeman (+27), Sibyl Bartlett (+26) and Richard Brockbank (+24), bearing in mind they only needed 3, 4 and 7 points respectively to win their games. It didn’t start well for the Bees as Newcomb lost to Brockbank in two straight ends and then Millward fell victim to Wootton-Freeman. Smillie got her side back in the match by getting the better of Bartlett and then Newcomb just edged Wootton-Freeman 31-30 in their final end to level things off at 2-2. Smillie then saw off Brockbank, Millward beat Bartlett, and Smillie completed her hat-trick to win the match 5-2. They decided to play the two remaining singles and Bartlett gained some consolation by beating Newcomb before Millward scraped home against Brockbank 31-30, 31-30.
The A team (Steve Hemmings, Matthew Daish & Phil Handy), who normally ply their trade in the Premier league travelled to Southbourne and came away with a 5-2 victory over Merton C from Div 1. Captain Hemmings (+6) got the ball rolling with a win over Alan Solomons (+14) but then Daish (+7) lost to Steve Oakley (+15). Handy (+6) put Milton back in front by beating Matt King (+11) and Hemmings (pictured below) added to the tally by getting the better of Oakley in the fourth match. Handy saw off Solomons so Daish needed to beat King to close out the match, but just lost out in the third end 28-31. By the seventh game, Handy was truly in his pomp and he disposed of Oakley in three straight ends to claim the match for Milton.
The E team (Frank Handy, Simon Daish & Bobo Jiang) had to travel to deepest darkest Parkstone to take on their Div 2 fellows Lynwood C and came away with a 7-2 victory for their trouble. Captain Handy (+13) got Milton going by beating Melvyn Gregory (+15), and then Daish (+18) did likewise to ex-Miltonian Mick Barry (+17). Milton stuttered as Jiang (+16) fell victim to Shay Pollard (+17) and then Handy lost to Barry which levelled things off at 2-2. Jiang then beat Gregory and Milton didn’t look back after that and had it won by 5-2 when Jiang disposed of Barry in two straight ends. They decided to see the evening out and Milton added insult to injury as Handy and Daish won their final matches. Full result details are below:- Read the rest of this entry
GOLDEN PERFORMANCES FROM THE GOLDINGS! (WEEK 10 MATCHES)
The New Milton Table Tennis Club had a slightly better week in the Bournemouth and District League as their teams won four out their ten matches, and the Golding family had a hand in two of those victories.
Simon Golding came up with his third hat-trick of the campaign to help his G team to a 6-4 victory over Breamore Batniks in Div 3. On the same night his 13 year old son Campbell (pictured below) bagged a brace to help his K team to the same scoreline over Shamrock C in Div 5 at the Arnewood School. Campbell displayed a maturity and tenacity beyond his years as both his wins came from two gruelling five-enders against wily Shamrock veterans Frank Godfrey and Lawrie Phillips. Fern Daish and Lynn Willrich were both ascloseasthis to coming up with their first hat-tricks of the campaign in this match, but both tantalisingly lost 11-13 over five ends to Shamrock’s Trevor Thompson.
The other Milton treble-makers were Phil Handy, who helped his A team to a 7-3 victory in the Premier, and Gerard Redman’s & Frank Handy’s full houses helped their table-topping E team to take maximum points in Div 2. This enabled them to put some more blue sky between them and the C team who could only manage a draw against North Bmth. Finally, Mike Roberts’s hat-trick secured a precious point for his J team who are currently lying bottom of Div 4. Full results details are below:- Read the rest of this entry
DOUBLE GOLD FOR SHAUN!
As some of you may know, our club chairman Shaun Newcomb is the regional disability coach for the South and South East; the monthly training sessions for the squad are held at the disability sports club “SportsAble” in Maidenhead, Berkshire. On the weekend of 23/24th November, SportsAble held their inaugural Disability Grand Prix tournament at the nearby Cippenham Table Tennis Club’s premises near Slough.
As Shaun puts it, “…although I am more focussed on the coaching these days, I still enjoy entering the national disability events as firstly they’re fun and a chance to catch up with old friends and second, it keeps the young players on their toes!”
On day one of the competition were the class competitions where you only play people with similar disability levels and one of Shaun’s “pupils” Nicko Anderson from London, who won the wheelchair event at this year’s Sainsbury’s School Games caught Shaun napping to record his first ever win over his coach – and it was an emphatic 3-0!
“I hadn’t realised just how much Nicko had improved” said Shaun and with that loss Shaun had to work hard to gain the bronze medal in his class.
On Sunday, better prepared, Shaun has to face young Nicko again in the round robin stage of the prestigious Open tournament; said Shaun “Fortunately this time I managed to scrape it 3-2 and won my group, so avoiding a couple of players in other groups who I have struggled against” “Nicko was playing like a demon and also beat two of these other players in the latter stages, thus helping me out!!”
The final therefore saw Shaun and Nicko battling it out and although each set was very tough, Shaun drew on his experience of the big final and triumphed 3-0. Shaun pictured below with far left Nicko Anderson and immediate left President of SportsAble John Jenkins.
With his doubles partner Jack Pegram from Watford, Shaun also went on to win the doubles, beating the Welsh pair of Ashley Davies and Thomas Matthews, who had knocked out Newcomb and Pegram in the quarter finals at their last meeting in Nottingham in June.
Shaun is off to Hong Kong next month as team manager for the INAS World Championships for players with an intellectual disability. Adam Thompson who is Great Britain’s number one player in this class was also at the SportsAble tournament at the weekend and showed good form, winning his class apparently quite comfortably.

“L” OF A WIN FOR THE L TEAM (Week 9 Matches)
Following a week’s break for the Times and Directory Cup Handicap Cup competition, the New Milton Table Tennis Club came up with three wins out of nine in the Bournemouth and District league. One of these wins came as a 10-0 gift to the F team in Div 3 as Bmth Sports K were unable to put out a team.
The L team won their first match of the campaign against Winton YMCA G (6-4) and leap-frogged over them to get off the bottom of Div 5. Richard Brockbank came up with his first ever league hat-trick and then joined with 14 year old Andrew Stainton for the doubles which they needed for the win. They took the first two ends but lost their way a bit and lost the next two to set up a delicately poised finale. The Milton duo had the scent of a maiden victory in their nostrils and just shaded a nail-biting fifth end by 13-11 to take the laurels.
Milton’s only other win and hat-trick came in Div 2 as the C team beat Merton D 7-3 at Mudeford Wood Community Centre. Matt Winter got injured which meant that Malcolm Floyd (pictured below) had to play his final two singles straight off after helping Dave Cuddon to win the doubles. Floyd didn’t disappoint as he disposed of Merton’s Stewart King and Pete Hodson in three straight ends having already seen off King’s son Andrew without dropping an end.

Mixed Bag Of Cup Results for New Milton (T&D Prelim Round)
There was a break in the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis League as the week was given over to the Preliminary Round of the Annual Times and Directory Handicap Cup Competition. Nine of the New Milton Club’s eleven teams were entered into the competition, and five of them were drawn into the Preliminary Round, with mixed results.
The Cup provides an interesting diversion from the league programme in that it enables teams from across all divisions to be drawn against each other in a handicapped competition, best of three matches up to 31, with no doubles.
The only team to go through to Round One on merit was the L team from Div 5 (Richard Clampin, Dominic Stainton & Andrew Stainton) who just beat Div 5 fellows Bmth Sports R 5-4 at the Arnewood School. Clampin got the ball rolling by beating Bourne’s Tom Collins in two straight ends, and it was nip and tuck up to the ninth and final match when Clampin beat Bourne veteran Jim Simmonds 31-30 in the third end to win the tie. The D team got a much easier passage into Round One as Merton K had to concede their match because they were unable to put out a team.
The Div 2’s C team (Matt Winter, Dave Cuddon & Simon Golding) narrowly lost 3-5 to Bmth Sports E from Div 1, and the F team (Ian Linney, Sylvia Smith & Malcolm Nash) lost to Div 3 fellows Bmth Sports J by the even closer margin of 4-5 in the final match. The Club’s other team from Div 3, the G team (Bev Scott-Johns, Bill Page & Simon Golding) lost 1-5 against Winton YMCA B who normally ply their trade in Div 1.
So, the L and D teams go into the Round One draw with their club mates in the A, B, E and J teams, and the matches will be played week commencing 2nd December. However, the losing C, F and G teams live to fight another day as they will go into the consolation “Plate” competition which will be played week commencing 20th January 2014.
